Dust mite and pollen allergy in children

An allergy is an exaggerated reaction of the immune system after contact with a substance that is foreign to the body (=allergen). In principle, allergens are harmless, but the immune system of sensitive people regards them as dangerous and causes an allergic reaction.

Your doctor will discuss the treatment options with you.

The symptoms of house dust mite allergy depend on the site of the hypersensitivity reaction:

  • Nose: Itching, sneezing, nasal discharge, constipation.
  • Throat: Itching, pressure sensation.
  • Coughing, wheezing, tightness in the chest, severe shortness of breath.
  • Eyes: Itching, burning sensation, tearing, red eyes, swollen eyelids.

A pollen allergy, also known as hay fever, is an allergic condition in which the immune system reacts uncontrollably and excessively to grass, tree and herb pollen. The symptoms of hay fever arise when pollen enters the body of the allergic patient through the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and airways.

Several symptoms can occur together. In many cases, a multidisciplinary approach is required; to this end, we work together with the departments of internal diseases and allergy, skin diseases, gastroenterology and lung diseases.
