Prolactinoma is a benign tumour in which the anterior pituitary produces and releases too much prolactin. Note that hyperprolactinaemia can also be caused by certain drugs, pressure on the chest cavity and psychological problems. Elevated prolactin levels cause a decrease in libido and potency in men; breast development and nipple loss. In women, there is a disorder or absence of menstruation, loss of libido, nipple loss, the development of acne and male hair pattern. If you suspect this, please contact your GP. Bring the results of any examinations with you to the endocrinology consultation. You are not required to fast. An additional blood test (to confirm abnormalities) and/or other tests may also be performed, e.g. a pituitary NMR. After the diagnosis, we will determine the further policy (usually a medication policy, rarely a surgery policy) together with you.
Your doctor will discuss the treatment options with you.
