Collapsed lung or pneumothorax

The pleural cavity is the virtual space between the lungs and the chest. There is a vacuum in this space, causing the lungs to move with the chest. In a collapsed lung, air has entered this space, causing the lung to collapse. The patient experiences a stabbing pain at the chest and has difficulty breathing.

A collapsed lung can develop in various ways - spontaneously or as a result of trauma, a medical procedure or an underlying lung disease.

The first treatment consists of inserting a thoracic drain. It involves placing a tube between the chest and ribs to remove the air. This ensures that the lung can expand again. Any further treatment depends on the underlying cause. Your doctor will discuss this further with you.
