Stomach ulcer

The inner surface of the stomach is lined by a mucous membrane. It protects the stomach against the action of stomach acid. If the mucous membrane is not optimal, or if too much acid is produced, a wound can occur in the mucous membrane. A small crater then appears, which we call a stomach ulcer (peptic ulcer).

At the base of the ulcer, the underlying nerves become exposed. The acidic stomach contents come into contact with this, causing severe pain.
