A mammography examines the breast (mammary) glands with images obtained using X-rays.
Please take any previous mammograms with you for comparison.
You undress your upper body. The nurse places the breast on an X-ray plate. A second plate is used to slightly compress the breast. Compressing the breast produces better images. Four images are taken.
A mammogram is often followed by an ultrasound examination of the breasts.
The examination lasts approximately 20 minutes.
The specialist at the hospital will receive the result. You can go back to him/her after the examination.
If a doctor or specialist outside the Jan Yperman Hospital requested the examination, you will receive a letter with a personal PIN code and instructions.
Please contact your treating doctor for more information.
