Middle ear infection or otitis media

Middle ear infection or otitis media is a common problem in children and to a lesser extent in adults. Middle ear infections are due to a dysfunction of the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx.

There are two kinds of middle ear infections:

  • Acute middle ear infection is characterised by a build-up of pus behind the eardrum, causing earache, fever and hearing loss.
  • Chronic middle ear infection is characterised by a build-up of non-purulent fluid behind the eardrum, causing hearing loss.
