Enlarged adenoids

Enlarged adenoids in the posterior nasal cavity usually occur in children, but also in adults. Adenoids that are too large, or colloquially also referred to as 'polyps', can cause nasal congestion, decreased nasal breathing, open mouth breathing, snoring or heavy breathing during sleep. If the adenoids are inflamed, patients present with recurrent nasal discharge and colds. Enlarged adenoids are partly responsible for recurrent ear infections or permanent fluid in the middle ear. This is due to Eustachian tube dysfunction, blockage and being the source of infection.

During nasal breathing, air flows through the nasopharynx. The Eustachian tube opens into the same cavity, which regulates air pressure in the middle ear and ensures mucous drainage. If the adenoid is chronically inflamed, this can lead to persistent or recurring colds or ear infections.

If the adenoid is too large, the nose and also the ears become blocked, which can cause symptoms such as mouth breathing, snoring and hearing loss. In these cases, the adenoid is best removed with surgery.
