Patellofemoral pain syndrome describes a type of pain that is primarily located at the front of the knee.
The pain is triggered by sitting for a long time, such as watching a film in the cinema. Going up and down stairs is often difficult.
The pain is generally nagging throughout the day, with painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs having little effect. It is fairly common in young adult girls, and is also called 'runner’s knee'.
It may be caused by increased cartilage sensitivity. Often there is increased joint flexibility.
