Sometimes growths develop inside the salivary glands.
Benign tumours
The majority of these are fortunately benign but unfortunately have to be removed anyway as they tend to keep growing. This is a delicate job at the site of the salivary glands in front of the ear and under the jaw, because of the course of the facial nerve that runs through and near these glands.
Malignant tumours
In the case of malignant tumours (cancer), more extensive treatment is needed. In addition to removing the tumour, the lymph nodes in the neck often have to be removed as well. Afterwards, radiation may even be necessary. The doctor will always take ample time to discuss these more complex treatments.
Your treating doctor will discuss the treatment options with you.
