Hemicolectomy (large intestine surgery)

A hemicolectomy is a colon operation in which part of the large intestine (colon) is removed in order to spare as much of the colon as possible. When the entire colon needs to be removed, it is called a colectomy. A hemicolectomy can take place on either the left or right side.

When?

A haemicolectomy may be necessary for various colon diseases:

  • Malignant tumour. If there is a tumour in one part of the colon, the affected part is removed.
  • Inflammation of protrusions in the mucous membrane of the colon (diverticulitis)
  • A strong and untreatable inflammation
  • Intestinal polyps.
  • Very extensive scarring.
  • Crohn's disease.
