Surgical treatment of haemorrhoids (hemorrhoidectomy)

Only 10% of all patients who consult for symptomatic haemorrhoids need surgical treatment. Most patients respond to non-surgical treatment.

Haemorrhoidectomy, or the surgical removal of haemorrhoids, may be considered in a patient with symptomatic large external haemorrhoids, combined internal-external haemorrhoidal suffering and internal haemorrhoidal prolapse grade III-IV.

Haemorrhoidectomy can be performed using several techniques and devices, depending on the presentation of the haemorrhoids and the surgeon's preference and experience.

Broadly speaking, this means that the excess haemorrhoidal tissue is removed and the wound can be opened or closed. Haemorrhoidectomy is effective in symptom relief and prevents relapse in most cases.
