Surgical treatment of a cyst

The treatment will depend on the pathology.

An acute abscess is incised and drained to reduce pain and inflammation. This procedure is performed under anaesthesia.

A chronically inflamed cyst is excised and removed. Complex or recurrent disease requires surgical treatment. The operation consists of removing the entire cyst, possibly with closure by means of a skin flap. More extensive procedures require a longer healing period. If the wound is left open, it should be dressed with sterile bandages.

Although the care can take from several weeks to three months, the chances of a successful outcome with an open wound are high. Primary wound closure with flaps is a more extensive procedure with a higher risk of infection. However, this technique may be appropriate in some cases.
