Surgical treatment of a fissure

A chronic fissure is treated surgically.

This is a minor procedure in which a small section of the internal sphincter is cut. As a result of this partial internal sphincterotomy, anal pain and spasm is reduced and the fissure can heal.

The fissure is often either removed or damaged skin from around the fissure may be cut away. If a skin appendage (skintag) is present, it should also be removed to promote healing. The small incision in the sphincter only very rarely gives rise to a reduction in continence. The procedure is performed at the day hospital .
