Peritoneal dialysis is a method which uses the patient’s own peritoneum in the abdomen as an 'artificial kidney'.
The peritoneum is a membrane that covers the organs in your abdominal cavity. The peritoneum is about 2 m² in size and is abundantly covered with small blood vessels.
For peritoneal dialysis a small flexible catheter is inserted in the abdomen under general or local anaesthesia.
