Prostatectomy

SERVICE(S): Urology

In a radical prostatectomy, the prostate is completely removed, along with the seminal vesicles, a portion of the bladder neck and the urethra that runs through the prostate.

This procedure is performed with robot-assisted surgery which requires a small incision in the abdomen, using the most modern method. After the removal of the prostate, the bladder and urethra are reattached.

The doctor will remove the prostate, seminal vesicles and possibly lymph nodes and sent these to the lab for analysis. This analysis is important to find out what tumour stage the prostate cancer is in.
