Chemotherapy for lung cancer

Chemotherapy is a drug that kills cancer cells or inhibits their cell division. This may cure the cancer or make a tumour smaller. There are different types of chemotherapy for lung cancer. Alectinib

Alectinib is a targeted therapy, which binds to a certain protein in some cancer cells. This is how it inhibits the growth of cancer cells.

The medicine Alectinib is administered in the form of capsules. Other medicines may be prescribed additionally to support your treatment.

Carboplatin-Etoposide

Carboplatin-Etoposide is chemotherapy consisting of 2 drugs: Carboplatin (= Paraplatin®) and Etoposide (= Vepesid®). It is administered via an infusion and follows a 21-day cycle.

Carboplatine-Gemcitabine

The therapy consists of two different drugs (cytostatics): Carboplatin (Paraplatin®) and Gemcitabine (Gemzar®). Some other medicines may be additionally prescribed. These serve to support the treatment, for example, to keep side effects under control. Carboplatin-Gemcitabine is used in the treatment of locally extensive or metastatic non-small cell lung carcinoma.

Carboplatin-Gemcitabine is administered via an infusion and follows a 21-day cycle. The next cycle starts in principle 3 weeks after day 1.

Carboplatine-Pemetrexed

Carboplatinum/Pemetrexed also known as Carbo/Alimta® is a chemotherapy consisting of two drugs: Carboplatin (=Paraplatin®, Carboplatinum®) and Pemetrexed (=Alimta®). It is used for the treatment of large-cell lung carcinoma.

Cisplatine-Etoposide

Cisplatin/Etoposide also called Cis/Eto, is a chemotherapy consisting of 2 drugs: Cistplatin (= Platinol®) and Etoposide (=Vepesid®). It is used for the treatment of large cell lung carcinoma.

The therapy can be administered with or without radiotherapy. Your doctor will explain this in detail before the therapy starts.

Cisplatine-Pemetrexed

Cisplatin/Pemetrexed also called Cis/Alimta® is a chemotherapy consisting of 2 cell inhibiting drugs: Cisplatin (=Platinol) and Pemetrexed (= Alimta).

Erlotinib (Tarceva®)

Erlotinib is a targeted therapy. The cancer cells have a fault in the gene which makes a protein called EGFR. This product is prescribed if the lung cancer is locally advanced or metastasised. Erlotinib is therefore used in non-small cell lung cancer that is EGFR-positive.

The medicine Erlotinib is administered in the form of tablets. Other medicines may be prescribed additionally to support your treatment.

Gefitinib (Iressa®)

Gefitinib is a targeted therapy. This drug is prescribed for patients who have a mutation of the cancer cells in the genes that produce a protein known as epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Gefitinib is used to treat non-small cell lung cancer that is locally advanced or metastatic.

The medicine Gefitinib is administered in the form of brown tablets. In addition, other medicines may be prescribed to support
your treatment.

Osimertinib (Tagrisso®)

Osimertinib is a targeted therapy. The cancer cells have a fault in the gene which makes a protein called EGFR. This product is prescribed if the lung cancer is locally advanced or metastasised. Osimertinib is therefore used in non-small cell lung cancer that is EGFR-positive.

The medicine Osimertinib is administered in the form of tablets. Other medicines may be prescribed additionally to support your treatment.

Pemetrexed-Alimta

Pemetrexed/Alimta is chemotherapy consisting of 1 drug: Pemetrexed. It is used for the treatment of non-small-cell lung carcinoma.

Pemetrexed/Alimta is administered via an infusion and follows a 21-day cycle. The next cycle starts in principle 3 weeks after day 1, if the blood results and your general condition allow it.
