Neck abscess

Although most abscesses originate in the teeth, (see also ‘dental abscess’) and the problems are limited to the mouth and jaw, an infection may spread to the neck. Sometimes infections also occur directly in the neck (e.g. due to inflammation of the salivary glands located under the lower jaw or due to inflammation of a cyst).

Neck infections can lead to serious problems as they can threaten the airway. Therefore, urgent treatment with a combination of antibiotics and drainage of the abscess is usually required. This is done under a short general anaesthetic. Most patients remain in hospital for several days afterwards.
