Adisson Crisis

6 to 8% of patients with adrenal insufficiency develop an Addisonian crisis due to an insufficient dose of hydrocortisone or an insufficient dose increase of hydrocortisone in stressful situations.

The symptoms that may present with an Addisonian crisis or adrenal crisis are malaise, vomiting, diarrhoea, low blood pressure, abdominal and back pain, dehydration and loss of consciousness to coma.

6% of patients who go through an Addisonian crisis die! To prevent an Addisonian crisis, patients receive extensive advice: these recommendations are reviewed at every consultation. They also receive an Addison's pass, which they must carry with them at all times.
