Cardiac MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

Cardiac MRI is based on electromagnetism. The scanner creates a magnetic field. With a cardiac MRI, the doctor can accurately determine the function of the heart, diagnose the cause of the heart failure and estimate the extent of the infarction by administering contrast media.

Patients should not have an MRI scan if they:

  • have an electronic implant such as a pacemaker (PM) or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).
  • have metal objects in their bodies that can move such as clips in the brain or eyes.
  • are claustrophobic.

Please contact your treating doctor for more information.
