Cataracts develop when proteins in the eye decline and the lens of the eye gradually loses its transparency, causing blurred vision.
The lens of the eye is composed of very specific proteins. These ensure that the lens is transparent and that the light passes through it perfectly. In cataracts, these proteins, and therefore also the transparency of the lens, slowly deteriorate. The lens changes in colour to yellow, green, then orange and brown. Sometimes, whitish clouds or flakes appear in the lens (opacities). Opacities scatter the light as they grow larger and thicker.
