Oral provocation test in children

In a food provocation test, a foodstuff is administered to the patient in increasing amounts. This is always done under the supervision of a nurse and a doctor.

A provocation test is recommended when other allergy tests, such as blood and skin tests, cannot provide certainty about whether there’s a food allergy or not.

  • We use provocation tests to provoke a possible reaction to confirm the food allergy diagnosis.
  • If the child already has a confirmed food allergy, we do the provocation test to see if any ‘tolerance’ has built up.
