Sleep apnoea

Apnoea is a pause in breathing that lasts at least 10 seconds. The body detects this pause in breathing and the brain gives a signal to wake up, which one may or may not remember. This sleep disruption resulting from the pause in breathing is referred to as arousal.

Everyone occasionally has apnoea while they sleep. But it is only when this occurs often and for a long time that it can pose a health threat and we refer to this as sleep apnoea.
