A laryngectomy is a surgical procedure in which the larynx is removed.
This procedure is usually performed in connection with cancer, but sometimes also in case of repeated severe problems of choking with pneumonia. Since the larynx is located at the junction between the airway and the digestive tract and since the vocal cords are inside it, this procedure has quite an impact on breathing, smelling, swallowing and speaking.
