Hans De Ruddere was born in Ieper on April 21, 1960. After completing his physical therapy studies, he started work at the then Kliniek Zwarte Zusters (Black Sisters Clinic) in the Rijselstraat on February 19, 1986. He moved with the hospital to its current location in the Briekestraat, where he ended his 40-year career on February 19, 2026.
In 2013, he let slip to a board member that he felt the hospital lacked ‘color’, to which the response was: “Make a suggestion!”
As a self-taught painter, he set to work and ‘ELLIPS’ was the result. Two canvases, both 2 meters high and 1.5 meter wide, together formed this enormous 2-by-3-meter painting. The ellipses were sketched freehand in pencil and then color was added with acrylic paint. There is no special meaning behind the colors. These are simply uplifting colors that have an impact on passersby, whether they be a physician or health care professional, patient or visitor. And the effect of colors is always a sense of gratitude for nature and life, a feeling that each person needs more than anything, certainly in a hospital.
