Exercise route in Geriatrics department

The exercise route is a series of murals designed to get patients moving in an accessible way, such as while waiting for examination results.

Origin

The exercise route was developed in 2018 by the Geriatric day hospital following a request from the Quality Department. At that time, each department was offered the opportunity to submit a care project. The best projects were honored and given a quality award. The exercise route initially consisted of a series of frames with simple exercises.

A brochure of these exercises was also developed, called ‘Dynamic exercise route’, which is now offered after day hospitalization and if we find that patients are in need of an additional exercise incentive.

Geriatrics

The exercise route caused a ‘movement’. After its development at the Geriatric day hospital, the occupational therapists at Geriatrics adopted the concept for use at the urgent geriatric care department, with adapted exercises of course.

Initially, all exercise routes consisted only of frames. Later, the idea arose to decorate the walls in the style of the exercise route. These murals were created by students from the Heilige Familie (Holy Family) in Ieper.
