Neurostimulation or neuromodulation is a treatment for people with permanent nerve pain, especially after neck and back surgery. Electrodes are inserted into the epidural space in the back up to a specific level on top of the spinal cord. The electrical pulses emitted by the electrodes affect the pain pathways in the spinal cord, and therefore, the final signal sent to the brain is no longer considered to be ‘pain’. So the brain is, as it were, misled.
Before a neurostimulator can be placed, you go through a process of checking whether you are actually a suitable candidate for this therapy. This comprehensive screening is a requirement for reimbursement of the neurostimulator.
Dr. De Naeyer and Dr. Declercq are specialised in neurostimulation. You will see either one of them when you qualify for this treatment.
In addition, advice may be sought from the physical specialist (Dr. Lefevere, Dr. Moyaert), the neurosurgeon (Dr. Maenhoudt, Dr. Vanhauwaert, Dr. Van Lerbeirghe), the neurologist (Dr. De Ridder), the psychiatrist (Dr. Engelhard) or an internist.
