The pain clinic of the Jan Yperman Hospital is a government-recognised multidisciplinary pain centre. In our multidisciplinary pain centre, doctors and paramedics from different fields work together.
The multidisciplinary team consists of a pain physician (= algologist), a physiotherapist, a neurologist, a psychiatrist, a neurosurgeon, an internist, a pain nurse, a psychologist, a social worker, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist and a secretary. In consultation, additional disciplines/specialists may be involved in the multidisciplinary process .
Chronic pain (pain that has been present for several months) is a complex phenomenon, and a clear cause is not always found.
Therefore, it may be required to deal with the pain not only in medical terms, but also to understand the pain problem and what influences it. Think of emotions, thoughts, ergonomic aspects, physical activity, lifestyle, social contacts... This vision is called the biopsychosocial approach.
Attention should also be paid to learning to cope with the pain. To achieve all this, we work in a multidisciplinary manner with the ultimate aim of reducing the level of pain and improving the quality of life. The various treatment sessions take place individually or in groups.
