What should you bring to the hospital?

When you register for an admission, it is always a good idea to bring the necessary administrative information and personal items.

Depending on the type of admission, you should bring different items:

In case of ordinary hospitalisation

Administrative

  • Identity card
  • Phone number and address of a contact
  • If you have hospital insurance, contact your insurance company before your admission. Bring your documents and/or insurance card with you on the day of admission. This allows us to invoice your personal share directly to certain insurance companies.

Medical

  • Name, address and referral letter of the GP
  • Blood group card and/or vaccination card, allergy card
  • Medical documents (medical reports, x-rays, lab results...) relating to your present and past health
  • Medicines you take (or a medication list)
  • Certificates for reimbursement of certain medications, issued by the consulting physician of the health insurance fund

Personal (in case of day admission)

  • Toiletries to freshen up
  • Reading material, stationery, toys (paediatrics admission)...
  • No valuables
  • Personal (in case of multi-day admission)
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, towels, flannels, soap, comb, 1 large bath towel...)
  • For gentlemen: shaving gear
  • Nightwear and underwear
  • Bathrobe, closed slippers
  • Reading material, stationery, toys (when admitted to paediatrics)...
  • Special stockings for the prevention of embolism or thrombosis
  • No valuables

In the event of an accident at work

The following documents and information are required for proper administrative processing:

  • Name, address and telephone number of the employer
  • Name and address of the employer's insurer
  • Policy number of the employer's insurance
  • Date of the accident

In case of incapacity for work, you must immediately inform your health insurance fund. Have your doctor fill out the appropriate form (‘Certificate of Incapacity for Work’) and send it to your health insurance fund within 48 hours. Also inform your insurance company in case it pays for the hospital costs.

As a foreign patient

Foreign EU patients must have a European Insurance Card (valid for urgent care during a temporary stay in Belgium) or an E112 form (necessary for a planned admission).

For foreign EU patients who do not have a valid European Insurance Card and for foreign non-EU patients, an advance payment of €500 per patient is requested upon admission.

In case of emergency admission

In an emergency, there is usually not much time to prepare for the admission. In that case, it is sufficient to have the mentioned items (see normal hospitalisation) delivered as soon as possible through a family member or confidant.

When admitted to the maternity ward

In addition to the formalities for an ordinary hospital admission, you also bring along:

marriage booklet or recognition form

maternity booklet or gynaecologist's referral
