How does a hospital discharge work?

Your doctor will decide when you can go home. You cannot leave until you have received a discharge letter from your attending physician. You will usually receive this letter during the course of the morning. In exceptional cases, your doctor might not be able to provide you with the necessary documents
until the afternoon.

If you leave against your doctor’s instructions,

you do so at your own risk and you will have to sign a declaration.

What documents will you be given?

On the day of your departure, your doctor and head nurse will give you several documents:

  • A medical report. This serves as your discharge letter. You should give this document to your GP when you go for a follow-up appointment.
  • A list of medication to take.

If needed, you will also receive:

  • A referral letter for home care.
  • A referral letter for another doctor at the hospital.
  • A paramedical discharge letter. This is a referral letter for additional treatment, such as physiotherapy, speech therapy, or dietetics.

What do you need to arrange before you go home?

  • Do you need transport? Then it's best to arrange this in advance.
    • Can someone come and pick you up? Then, if necessary, this person can bring a wheelchair from the entrance hall or from the Care Street (to be used with 1€ or 20 ct) to pick you up on the ward. Can't walk far? Then your driver may park briefly (max 15 minutes) at the main entrance so you can get in easily.
    • Do you need special transport? Ask your health insurance fund or a local ambulance service.
    • Would you like an ambulance service to take you home? The nurse will arrange this for you.
  • Do you need help at home (home care services, meals at home, equipment to borrow/medical aids such as hospital beds, walking frames, ... )? Our patient counseling service can assist you with this.
  • Our social service is ready for any support during discharge from the hospital.

Do I have to pay?

You do not have to pay anything at the time of discharge from hospital. The accommodation costs due will be specified in the detailed invoice you will receive at home (usually around six weeks after your discharge). Click here for more information about your invoice. If you have any questions, please contact our financial information point.
